Chapter XLV

“Diary. Attend in verbose mode.”

“Attending in verbose mode.”

“Did you get the call?”

“Yes.”

“When can you get the confirmation cipher sent? Today I hope.”

“Yes.”

“When the return confirmation is received, I would like you to file in cipher-encrypt-compression and delete all reference of in-the-clear copies.”

“Why bother, I’ll blow up before anyone can get even an electron’s worth of data out of me. What’s the point of encrypting data that is destined to annihilation?”

“Just being careful, I guess.”

“Right, good idea. I hope you are this careful about keeping my batteries recharged.”

Closing the diary’s case Woo, wondered if perhaps she hadn’t set the diary’s self-preservation impulse a trifle high during its original setup.

After a moment’s recollection Woo reopened the diary’s case.

“Diary. Attend.”

“Is it time for recharging?”

“Never mind that. Cancel my phone appointments with Jeff Bloom or John Are. It won’t be necessary for me to call; Alan can handle that.”

“Easy for you to say you aren’t set to explode at the slightest sign of a dead battery.”

Woo heaved a sigh, and thought to herself, “some of those references in the more ancient volumes to a that thing called ‘a Jewish Mother’ are beginning to make sense.”

“Diary, if you have the micro-volts for it, please telecom Sam Fauxley announcing my intention to stop by for a visit. It’s best to talk to Sam before Stan Lee ‘just drops in’ to ensure that she give full cooperation to Stan Lee.”

“That is a wise move, if I may say sir-mam. As liaison to IGADS (International Goddess And Dragonette Society) and chief-mimeo operator, it is most important that she have the overall picture since the chief mimeo operator (CMO) ultimately is the one that will be able to help. If an order is to be cut or a requisition to be made, Sam Fauxley as CMO is the one to produce the paper work. If she is ‘busy’ or ‘just doesn’t get around to it’, it doesn’t happen. If she ‘misunderstands’ an order and cuts instructions for something completely different, no matter how dreadfully sorry she may feel about ‘her little mistake’, it is the mimeo order she actually cuts that is carried out, not the original. If I may further venture to say, it seems that even though the CEO holds the position, the CMO holds the power.”

“Least you think that the moral of your little story has entirely escaped me, let me be quick to remind you that even though a CMO (or electronic equivalent) may hold the power, I hold access to the AC.”

“I’m only commenting in support of the excellence of strategy you are displaying by contacting Sam Fauxley prior to Stan Lee calling upon her for help. You don’t have to jump the gun and get so testy about it.”

“That reminds me, not being able to personally alert Kai Four to the change in plans, I hope reads the letter that I’ve sent along with Stan Lee before killing him and disappearing the body.

“Well off to Sam Fauxley then Ja Mere’s. If I can get back in time tonight, I should be able to finish up a few xpearimints. No point leaving them to rot just because of a few minor emergencies. ”

“Yes, I heartily agree. No point overlooking the day to day routine in the face of apparently more pressing issues. It is, after all, the continuance of one’s daily habits that will see one through.”

“In spite of the continued self-serving prodes about its own recharging, the diary did (however accidently) make a nice point about persistent routine.” Woo thought to herself, realizing “After the ups and downs of sporadic efforts are averaged, it is my habits that carry me through.”
