Experiment #1:
Observation.
This will be a good place to start.
Obtain an ordinary white emergency candle. It should be about 5 inches tall and about 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter. It's not recommended to use the short fat candles at this time.
Place the candle on a surface which is fire safe and positioned at a location which is comfortable for you to view without strain.
Light the candle.
In a paper notepad (perhaps spiral bound) enter your observations.
You should be able to easily make note of 50 sperate observations. A good target is 100.
Expect to take a total of three hours for this exercise. Break the time into three 1 hour sessions.
Notes:
- 1) Don't hesitate to state the obvious. If the candle is white say so.
- 2) Don't fall into the trap of making notes by "class". Or in other words: two observations are different if they are different in any respect. Unless you make fine distinctions it will not be possible to note 10 let alone a 100 observations. Thus if you hear your inner voice saying: "Oh, that observation is similar to .... thus I won't write it down." then reconsider this filtering. Unless the observation is exactly the same it is different.
- 3) Go for detail. The soot in the molten wax moves. (Yes there are tiny speck of soot in the molten wax at the top of the candle.) This soot moves. One observation is "the soot in the molten wax at the top of the candle moves." Another observation is: "when the soot moves toward the outer edge of the candle it is on the .... of the pool". Another observation is: "when the soot reaches the outer edge of the pool is does....". "Another observation is: "when the soot moves toward the inner edge of the candle it is on the .... ". Etc. Etc.
These instructions should get you started on the first exercise. If you have any questions about procedure don't hesitate to write.
