The Alchemical Works of Geber, limited edition,
First Transalted by Richard
Russell in 1678.
First published in 1928 as "The Works of Geber", this
limited edition, was published in 1974 by
Samuel Weiser. It is a hardbound book with a dust jacket,
both in immaculate condition, 265 pages.
The history of alchemy has a perennial fascination, and the Latin works which are
attributed to Geber have long been considered among the most
important of medieval chemical treatieses. Geber (or
Jabir) is of particular significance in that in spite of the
mysticism and obscure symbolism that pervaded the field, he clearly recognized the importance
of a scientific approach and emphasized experimentation and its
practical results. He made noteworthy advances in both the
theory and practice of chemistry. His most famous tracts were Of the Investigation or Search of Perfection;
Of the Sum of Perfection, or Of the Perfect Magistery, Books I and II; Of the Invention of Verity,
or Perfection; Of Furnaces, with a Recapitulation of the Author's Experiments. These were published
in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in French and German, with the first English translation
appearing in 1678. That translation is reprinted here in modern form, complete with the
illustrations contained in the Latin edition published in
1545.
