Editorial

Inner Journeys is a book review journal written especially for trade bookstore buyers, library book selectors, and anyone else interested in books presenting ideas in an aesthetic way. The frequency is quarterly, and in its expanded version, beginning with the Winter 1994 issue, Inner Journeys will have 16 or more pages. We will feature capsule reviews and some in-depth essays (with trade news, interviews, and maybe gossip...) on books predominantly from independent publishers-books that don't necessarily get reviewed by newspapers, professional journals, or the trade magazines. Since Gateways is a small press, we are familiar with the plight of those intrepid publishers who take the risks and reap the joys of publishing new and/or unusual ideas. Our fields of special concentration will be books on consciousness, personal transformation, wholistic health, fine art, fantasy, and science fiction; however, we'll review books we like in any category. We will dedicate most of our editorial space to small presses and their books, aiming to provide book buyers and selectors with information that will help them choose the best books for their stores, libraries, or classroom needs.

Inner Journeys is mailed to 2,500 or more bookstores, including several hundred outside the United States. We constantly add to our list new members of the American Booksellers Association (ABA); stores which send STOP orders to Gateways (for books by Dr. Claudio Naranjo, Robert de Ropp, E.J. Gold, and others); librarians; training centers of various kinds; and other publishing professionals. Many of these people have told us that they need any help they can get in navigating the waters of new book selection-and that more book reviews in fewer words will better serve their needs. We have no intention of taking over the territory of other publications in this field, such as New Age Retailer, NAPRA Journal, Moving Words-all excellent journals. A special tip of the hat to Small Press magazine and Hungry Mind Review, for high literary standards, and a thank you to ABA's Bookselling This Week newsletter for printing David Unowsky's excellent columns! Here at Inner Journeys, our idea is to add another voice to the mix, advocating the interests of independent booksellers, dedicated publishers, and, ultimately, those discerning readers we all hope to reach. We also decided to have the quarterly journal pay its way by accepting advertising from exactly those businesses served by Inner Journeys columns and news items: publishers of ideas.
